ABOUT US

In the summer of 2014, Priscilla Tenggara and Gopika Mavalankar developed Project Outside the Box after being given the opportunity to work at a local San Diego non-profit, Community HousingWorks through the Bank of America Student Leaders program. The Project was inspired after they discovered the lack of stable female role models for the girls at Community HousingWork's teen center.

Priscilla graduated from Rancho Bernardo High School and will be attending UC Irvine in the fall of 2014. From a very young age, Priscilla has always been a curious thinker. With this mindset, she implemented her "outside-the-box" thinking to encourage creativity and open-mindedness throughout the duration of the Project. Her inspiration to help others stems from her childhood experiences immigrating from Indonesia to America. Barely speaking English at the time, Priscilla developed social confidence through the guidance of her church peers. This tremendous impact has shaped her interest to serve and change her community.

Also a recent Rancho Bernardo High School graduate, Gopika will be attending UC Davis fall of 2014. She will be studying International Relations and hopes to one day work in politics or public policy. As a firm believer in the power of education, Gopika pursued a college-oriented program for the Project. For years, Gopika has contemplated the "nature vs. nurture" debate, and believes in creating a healthy environment for young adults to rise to their fullest potential. One day, she hopes to combine her passion for female empowerment and education on a greater scale to reduce gender inequality around the world.
